Lovely and traditional on the outside, the inside is often cramped with defined spaces that are cut off from each other and natural light. This Laurelhurst home was no exception. The dining room is in the center of the home, its window tight to the neighbor’s blue house and fence. The solution? CREATE a compelling view. Set a white wall outside a large window as a backdrop with a sculptural tree in front, lit at night. This brings the outside in and gives breathing room to the center of the house. My future client pushes back a berry branch. “Excuse the mess, but I like it wild.” That moment informed the design. There is beauty in natural imperfection, in the unexpected and the weathering of time. I call this "A house with Soul." Objects collected on travels or family heirlooms can provide a richness that transcends design. This is a collection of pottery crafted by my client’s grandmother. The set is earthy, unique and artistic, just like Freddie. I know this because I met my client when I was four years old and knew her grandmother. Forty-five years later I designed a house for my friend and we displayed the tea pot and mugs on the basalt counter, adding a personal addition to the collection of contemporary art in the home. This home is designed to respond to the sun’s location, optimal lake views and the prevailing winds on Lake Washington. The curved wall is more than a bold statement; it is the source of air flow that naturally ventilates the house in the summer while providing a source of solar heat and natural daylight during the winter. There is deep meaning in the design, meant to honor the family of the owner and Erich Mendelson, a famous expressionist architect, who designed the family’s pre-World War II department stores, lost when they fled Germany. These colors have an ephemeral quality that change in the sunlight. As you move upwards through the house the palette lightens. The material palette consisted of natural materials: hemp, linen, cotton and whicker. I call this "A house with Soul." Objects collected on travels or family heirlooms can provide a richness that transcends design. This is a collection of pottery crafted by my client’s grandmother. The set is earthy, unique and artistic, just like Freddie. I know this because I met my client when I was four years old and knew her grandmother. Forty-five years later I designed a house for my friend and we displayed the tea pot and mugs on the basalt counter, adding a personal addition to the collection of contemporary art in the home. She survived a lot in the last few decades; a clumsy 1980’s sunroom addition and years of disrepair and neglect. I intimately know this house. I started the project in 2003 with Olson Kundig. The remodel took 15 years with two owners; multiple phases and permits; and starts and stops. Starlings then owned the house, coming back to nest in wall cavities left open from abruptly abandoned work. They protested when we came back to repair her. I could still see the strong midcentury bones in the exposed car decking ceilings, heavy timber beams and the well-proportioned east-facing facade. We stripped down the interior and exterior, carefully keeping the integral mid-century features. Small rooms were removed and spaces opened to flow together; steel doors and sunshades added definition. We kept the heavy timber beams and ceilings, replaced the old windows with new still authentic looking windows, kept trim-less moldings and refinished and reinstalled the original radiators. The kitchen was expanded and redesigned, opening up to a now accessible garage roof with a built in conversation pit. Without expanding the footprint of the house, it was transformed from modest to impactful.
